Man fights for his life after Whalley Range stabbing – police appeal for witnesses

A man is fighting for his life after being stabbed in Whalley Range in broad daylight.

The victim was attacked on Alexandra Road South, near to Alexandra Park, at about 9:20 this morning, having come from Yarburgh Street.

Emergency services were called to the scene and took the man to hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

Detective Chief Inspector, of GMP’s South Manchester Division, Andy Cunliffe said: “A man is fighting for his life in hospital and I would urge anybody who has information about this incident to come forward.

“It is not known at this stage whether the offender and the victim knew each other.”

Police believe the victim was attacked by two men who then ran off into the Alexandra Park, which has now been cordoned off.

DCI Cunliffe advised members of the Whalley Range community to remain calm despite the horrible nature of the crime.

He said: “When an incident like this happens, I understand it can cause a huge amount of distress in the community.

“But I would like to reassure the public that we have extra patrols in the area and are doing all we can to catch the offenders.”

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 0161 856 4223 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
