£3.5m Manchester Airport security overhaul will process ‘800 passengers an hour’

Passengers should be able to enjoy reduced waiting times thanks to improved security facilities worth £3.5million at Manchester Airport.

The improvements have added 40% to the security capacity in Terminal One and will help to improve customer service levels.

New lanes will be capable of processing around 800 passengers or 1,200 trays per hour and there has also been investment in the latest equipment and technology to speed up the process through security.

The improvements include parallel load arrangements, radio frequency tracking of trays and the latest body scanners.

Tricia Williams, Customer Services Director for Manchester Airport, said: “Terminal One is our busiest terminal with over 10million passengers using the building every year.

“We need to ensure we are investing in the right areas to handle the additional traffic.”

The investment will see the recruitment of 200 additional security staff in preparation for next summer’s peak season to add to the 840 security staff who are already working across the three terminals and help arrivals as well as departures.

“It’s not just in the departure process but arrivals also and we have worked alongside UK border Force to invest in the latest generation electronic passport gates in arrivals in Terminal Two and now Terminal One,” Ms Williams said.

Manchester Airport has been undergoing a rapid period of growth and is expected to reach its peak figure of 22million within the next few months.
