Can you check… mate? Manchester International Festival appeal for return of giant black knight chess piece

By Helen Le Caplain

Manchester International Festival (MIF) organisers were left scratching their heads when a giant chess piece from their over-sized outdoor set vanished last weekend.

Budding Garry Kasparovs were invited to put their skills to the test against other chess lovers in the sunny surroundings of Festival Square, however one intrepid player has captured the black knight piece and made off with him.

Players are now having to make do with an improvised replacement – a yellow stool – to make their moves.

An MIFspokesman said: “MIF would love to get the black knight back, help us to find the missing piece!

“Let’s see if we can get it returned, no questions asked, to where it belongs on Festival Square.”

You can report the black knight’s whereabouts on Twitter using the hashtag #MIF13findtheknight

The Machine runs until July 21, for more information click here
