Manchester man robbed at knife point for industrial saw – police suspect same pair also swiped necklace

By Thomas Lee

A man was robbed at knife point at a South Manchester building site in broad daylight last week.

The 46-year-old construction worker was approached by two men at 2:20pm on August 15, on the building site of the Metrolink on Hollyhedge Road, Benchill.

He got out of his digger and was threatened with a six inch knife, the second man grabbed an industrial Stihl saw, worth upwards of £500, and both men fled the scene down Hollyhedge Road.

One of the offenders is described as being white, 5ft 6in tall, of slim build, short fair hair, in his mid-20s and wore a white t-shirt, jeans and trainers.

The second man is described as being white, 5ft 6in, of slim build, medium-length dark hair and aged between 20-25.

He wore a scruffy black top, jeans and trainers and carried a six inch knife that had black electrical tape around the handle.

Three people, aged 13 to 15, have been arrested on suspicion of robbery and have been bailed until September 11 pending further inquiries.

Detective Constable Andy Bromley from Wythenshawe INPT said that although arrests had been made, the police were still appealing for witnesses to come forward.

He said:  “If you were in or around the area at the time and saw something suspicious, I would ask you to contact us.

“We also believe a robbery that happened on the same day at around 5.30pm on Wendon Road may be linked.

“In this case, a woman was approached from behind and had her necklace stolen from around her neck.”

Anyone with information on both of these cases should phone police on 0161 856 4882 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
