University of Salford fashion students have won a prestigious clothing industry award for the third time in four years.

The 70 final year Fashion Design and Image Making and Styling students scooped the Fashion Monitor Colleges Portfolio Award at the annual Graduate Preview Day, organised by the British Fashion Council, (BFC) to showcase student portfolios from 25 of the UK’s leading colleges.

Their work was reviewed by a judging panel of industry experts headed by the Chair of the BFC Colleges Council, Anne Tyrrell, who felt the University’s entry demonstrated the best overall presentation of work.

Salford Fashion Programme Leader Bashir Aswat said: “It’s a very special thing and such a privilege to have colleagues and peers complimenting the students’ work.

It’s phenomenal that the University has won against such strong contenders for a third time in a row, and our students certainly deserve their success.

The portfolios really are a beautiful testament to all their hard work over their time here at Salford.”

The best students received subscriptions to Fashion Monitor, the industry’s leading provider of contacts, news and events.

Now in its 19th year Graduate Preview Day highlights a wealth of new, young and innovative British design students due to graduate this summer.

The event brings together industry insiders from media, recruitment, retail, design, manufacturing, sales, marketing and PR to preview the work of students who will be entering the jobs market later in the year.

This year it attracted representatives from ASOS, Cos, Matches, Max Mara, Paul Smith and Selfridges, and international media including American Vogue and Vogue Italia.

The BFC’s Anne Tyrrell said: “It was an excellent and original portfolio showing the innovation and breadth of the fashion photography, styling and fashion design graduates’ work and makes a strong statement of the standard of the course and its content at the University of Salford.

“We have seen it grow in strength in the last few years but it certainly jumped out as the winner in the panel’s opinion. It was great to see this development at Graduate Portfolio Preview day and Fashion Monitor were simply delighted with their winning presentation.”

The winning student collections will be on show at London’s Graduate Fashion Week from June 2 – 5.
