Homeless man attacked and robbed of just £1.30 as he slept rough in Manchester – two men charged

Two men have been charged after a homeless man was viciously attacked and robbed of just £1.30 in Manchester city centre on Wednesday.

The victim was set upon at 10.10pm on Portland Street, where he was sleeping rough.

Andrew James Marsden, 30, of Oban Crescent, Stockport, and Peter Lee Blanchard, 34, of no fixed abode, appeared today before Manchester and Salford Magistrates Court charged with robbery.

A kind-hearted stranger who defended the homeless man during the attack is being asked to come forward by police.

Detective Constable Steve Lowton said: “We know that this member of the public intervened and came to the victim’s aid, so I would appeal for this man to come forward.

“Not only so we can thank him, but also because he may have crucial information.”

Upon witnessing the crime, a member of the public interceded and began challenging the two men before they were detained by the police.

Anyone with information should call police on 0161 856 2510 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
