MM’s Year in Review: May 2023

Chelsea Women win WSL – Chelsea Women seek a fifth Women’s Super League straight title as they beat Bristol City 3-0 which wins them three points to succeed to the top of the table, with manager Emma Hayes.

Max Verstappen wins Miami Grand Prix – The Red Bull driver slipped past Sergio Perez after a late pit stop and sped away to claim his third victory of the season. Red Bull have yet to lose in five races this year. The victory also re-established Verstappen as the best driver on Formula 1’s best team, and the betting favourite to win the next time out.

Sweden wins Eurovision 2023 – Sweden’s Loreen makes history with the nation’s second win with Finland in second place. She wowed her audience with her hit song ‘ Tattoo’ and gained 583 points overall. Loreen also won Eurovision back in 2012 with her other song, ‘Euphoria’ and became the first woman to win the competition twice. 

France celebrates 10 year anniversary of legalising same-sex marriage – Streets of France took over with allies and lovers as people gathered around the country to celebrate the 10th year anniversary of same-sex marriage. On the 18th May 2013, France became the 14th country in the world to have allowed same-sex couples to get married.

Coronation of King Charles III and Camilla – The coronation of The King and The Queen took place at Westminster Abbey on Saturday 6th May. Charles had acceded to the throne on 8th September 2023 upon the death of Queen Elizabeth II. The service was conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury and Their Majesties were returned back to Buckingham Palace for The Coronation Procession.


Manchester marks sixth anniversary of Manchester Arena attack – The city of Manchester held a day of remembrance to honour the 22 victims who passed and lost their lives in the Manchester Arena terror attack back in May 2017. The reflection ceremony was held at the city centre Glade of Light memorial. Two one-minute silences were held at Manchester Victoria Station at 12pm and 10:31pm.

Philip Schofield sacked from ITV amid an affair scandal – Schofield had left ITV after and admitted to having an affair with a younger male colleague at ‘This Morning’ before lying to cover it up. The TV presenter had said the relationship was “unwise, but not illegal”. He was still married to his wife Stephanie Lowe at the time of the affair but split in 2022, after coming out as gay.
