Owens Park Tower demolished as Fallowfield campus redevelopment begins

The site of Owens Park Tower is being prepared for construction to begin, as part of The University of Manchester’s wider regeneration of the Fallowfield Campus.

Manchester-based company P.P. O’Connor began the demolition process at the start of 2024, and it was completed in spring 2025.

The University has said that high-quality student accommodation will be built on the site, and the Fallowfield campus will now offer 5,400 beds.

Owens Park Tower will be remembered by Mancunians and by those who have studied in the city. It was built in the 1960s and housed thousands of students every year.

Barra Mac Ruairí, Chief Property Officer at the university, said: “Owens Park Tower will always be remembered by generations of staff and students. For many of our alumni, it was their first home in this city.

“But a great new chapter awaits our Fallowfield campus, and I am excited to see our bold vision for modern student accommodation, which reflects our commitment to providing an exceptional living environment, come to life.”

Other Fallowfield student accommodations, such as Owens Park, Oak House and Woolton Hall, will eventually be renovated.

The changes come at a time of increasing demand for student accommodation in Manchester.
