Stockport will commemorate the life of Girls Aloud icon Sarah Harding with a fundraising event for The Christie Charity and the Sarah Harding Breast Cancer Appeal next month.
The event, on 6 October, will celebrate Harding’s life, beginning at midday with the unveiling of a commemorative plaque beside a mural dedicated to the local treasure. It will be followed by a Girls Aloud-themed party at Thread Bar from 13.30.
Harding – whose road to global stardom started in Stockport – was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2020 and received treatment at The Christie.
Before her tragic death aged 39 in September 2021, she revealed her final wish: for earlier detection and treatment of the disease.
Harding’s consultant at The Christie, Dr Sacha Howell, said: “Sarah was passionate about understanding why young women are being diagnosed without any family history of the disease.
“I’m sure she’d be thrilled about the fundraising event for The Christie Charity in Stockport.”
Organiser John Barrett is the creator of the Stockport Music Map walking tours and is highly esteemed for his work preserving the town’s musical history.
Barrett said: “Sarah was such a huge part of Stockport’s story.
“We’re honoured to celebrate her legacy while supporting The Christie Charity, and the Sarah Harding Breast Cancer Appeal.”
Tickets for the charity day cost £15 and include a Christie wristband and pin badge, the plaque unveiling, a guided music tour and entry to Thread for the party – where attendees will be treated to screenings of Girls Aloud performances as they toast to the memory of Harding.
And don’t be afraid to top up those glasses, as Thread Bar is donating 20% of its takings to The Christie Charity and the Sarah Harding Breast Cancer Appeal.
