Aguerooooooo: Sergio and three Man City teammates hit World XI nominations

Sergio Aguero is the fourth Manchester City player to feature on the nominations list for the Fifa FIFPro World XI.

The shortlist features the world’s 55 best players, including Argentinians Aguero and Pablo Zabaleta, Ivory Coast’s Yaya Toure, and club captain Belgian Vincent Kompany.

The nominations come just days after Toure, Kompany, and Zabaleta were all nominated for Uefa’s Team of the Year.

While Aguero missed out on the Uefa list, he was honoured at the Football Supporters’ Federation awards where he was named player of the year.

The striker told the club’s website: “I’m very happy. It’s a really special award as it’s from the supporters and I’d also like to take this opportunity to thanks everyone at the club.

“Not just the players but the coaching staff and technical team as well.”

FIFPro, the world players union, included just one Englishman on the list, Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney, one of two United players, the other being Angel Di Maria.

The Premier League as a whole boasted 12 players on the 55-man list, the same number as the Bundesliga, a figured dwarfed by La Liga’s staggering 22 players.

The most featured club is Real Madrid, 12 of whose players feature on the shortlists, while Bayern Munich have 10 and Barcelona nine players.

FIFPro invites all professional footballers – around 45,000 players usually take part – on the planet to pick a goalkeeper, four defenders, three midfielders, and three forwards.

The final World XI will be announced at Fifa’s prestigious Ballon d’Or ceremony in Zurich on Monday January 12, 2015.
