Richie Wellens set to become new Salford City head coach

Richie Wellens is set to become the new head coach of Salford City.

The League Two club have been searching for Graham Alexander’s successor for three weeks and are believed to be close to appointing the Swindon Town boss at the Peninsula Stadium.

Reports last night suggested that Swindon had rejected a formal approach from Salford for Wellens’ services, but it now looks as though a deal has been agreed to relieve him from his post.

Wellens has experience of managing in League Two, having won promotion with The Robins in 2019-20.

Wellens is no stranger to Salford City, having been a long-term friend of the Class of 92 and playing for the club during their non-league days.

He will not be in the dugout for Swindon’s game against Plymouth Argyle tonight whilst his move to Salford is finalised.
