By Matthew Ord

Manchester City’s defensive woes continued last night with confirmation that Martin Demichelis faces six weeks on the sidelines with ligament damage.

Argentine star Demichelis was was a late deadline day capture from Atletico Madrid but this latest injury – reportedly picked up in training – is the third such setback for City boss Manuel Pellegrini already this campaign.

Influential skipper Vincent Kompany has been ruled out for a month after limping off with a groin injury against Newcastle United on the opening day of the season while Micah Richards is also unavailable.

The latest injury blow leaves Pellegrini with just five fully fit first team defenders, one of whom, Serbian Matija Nastasic, has only just returned from injury himself.

City face a tough set of fixtures after the international break starting with a difficult trip to Stoke, the commencement of both their Champions League and League Cup campaigns and hosting rivals United in the first Manchester derby of the season all within the next few weeks.
