Manchester City’s Fernandinho says he will be fighting fit for crucial Champions League tie against Barcelona

By Alex Lanigan

A collective sigh of relief can be heard all around the Etihad and within the homes of Manchester City fans.

This is after Manchester City new-boy Fernandinho revealed that he is on course to be fit for the crucial Champions League tie against Barcelona.

The Brazilian midfielder’s absence was strongly felt by the Blues in the defeat on Monday night and there were worries he would be out for up to a month.

However Fernandinho stated on his Twitter page  that he would be back sooner than the original diagnosis much to the relief of manager Manuel Pellegrini.

“I would like to tell you about my injury and quell rumours. I return to play in 15 days or less,” he revealed.

Pellegrini will be ecstatic to hear this news as he is already without talismanic striker, Sergio Aguero for a month with a hamstring injury and the rejuvenated Samir Nasri, who is recovering from a knee injury.

Fernandinho has been integral to the Blues performances this season since his summer move from Shakhtar Donetsk.

The 28-year-old’s tactical awareness and discipline has allowed the African Player of the Year, Yaya Toure to embark on his trademark marauding runs from midfield in what has been an excellent season for the former Barcelona man.

James Milner and Jack Rodwell are available to fill in for Fernandinho though both have been struggling with injuries recently.
