Angelo Henriquez says Wigan may have been home, but Manchester United must win Community Shield

By John McDougall

The Community Shield clash this weekend will hold a special place in Manchester United striker Angelo Henriquez’s heart as he comes up against ex-club Wigan Athletic.

The young Chilean forward spent the second-half of last season on loan at the DW Stadium, scoring once in eight games, and is yet to make his United competitive debut.

And though he enjoyed his time with the Latics and that it made him a better player, the 19-year-old insists he will hold no sentiment for the Wembley Stadium clash.

“Wigan hold a special place in my heart and it will be a special game for me,” he told United’s official website. “Hopefully we can get the result we want. It’s important for us to win the trophy.

“My time at Wigan helped me a lot. It was a great experience to be in a first-team squad and playing in big matches in the Premier League and FA Cup.

“The biggest thing I learnt is that the Premier League is one of the best and most important leagues in the world, and you have to be at your very best in every game.

“I want to continue to improve and I know that in order to do that I just need to keep training hard and doing my best.”

United are back home from their pre-season tour, which ended with a draw in Sweden against AIK Fotboll, in which Henriquez scored the Red Devils’ equaliser.

The Chilean international hopes he has made his mark on new Old Trafford boss David Moyes and is learning so much through training with the likes of Ryan Giggs and Rio Ferdinand.

“To be involved in my first game with the first team and score was a great moment for me,” he added.

“It’s been fantastic to train with the squad and also spend time with the players. I am learning a lot.”

Henriquez was brought to Old Trafford last summer by former manager Sir Alex Ferguson for an undisclosed fee from Universidad de Chile.
