Danny the champion? Welbeck believes Euro wonder goal inspired successful Manchester United season

By Alex Bysouth

England international Danny Welbeck believes his Euro 2012 experience proved the catalyst in propelling his Manchester United performances to a new level this season.

Welbeck scored a fantastic goal against Sweden in the group stages which led to comparisons with Dutch legend Dennis Bergkamp from teammate Theo Walcott.

And despite finding goals hard to come by this campaign, Welbeck has become a United regular and proved himself adept at playing in a number of positions.

“The Euros was a really good tournament on a personal level and it gave me a lot of confidence coming into this season,” he told United Review.

“I think my performances have been more consistent. I haven’t always played in my preferred position.

“But playing in different areas allows you to develop an understanding of the other attacking positions which can only benefit you as a player.

“The one thing I want to do is score more goals.”

Despite losing the derby to City on Monday, the Red Devils sit 12 points clear of their rivals and look certain to claim a 20th league title.

However, Welbeck confessed disappointment still surrounds Old Trafford at the manner in which they exited the Champions League to Real Madrid – although admitting it was an amazing experience.

“It was a massive day for the club and for myself,” explained Welbeck. “The manager picked the team that he thought could go out and get the result and we had chances to win the game there.

“Ultimately the tie ended in big disappointment for us, but I was pleased with my performance at the Bernabeu and it was an experience I’ll never forget.

“It’s always great to be playing in the big games, but I want to play in every game.

“It gives you confidence, but it’s something I just try to take in my stride while focusing on continuing to improve and develop as a player.”
