Rochdale skiing sensation Daisi Daniels is targeting more medals this week after she took silver in the girls’ super-G at the English Alpine Championships.
Daniels, 15, finished first in Sunday’s super-G, sponsored by Rossignol, and was a whisker away from gold again on Monday, finishing second behind Sophie Foster by 19 hundreths of a second.
The alpine skier, who races for the British Ski Academy, finished with a time of 50.60 seconds and continues to display her status as one of Britain’s best young skiers.
“It’s been pretty good here so far, I woke up and I was pretty psyched for the race, really excited,” said Daniels.
“Super-G is one of my favourite disciplines, I love the speed and the adrenaline and I’m really happy with how it went.
“It was a bigger distance than Sunday and there was more speed, I headed out the gate full steam and the course was good, I don’t think I took enough direction out of the first banana but I carried on and tried to gain it back.
“I didn’t quite manage to gain it all back but ended it in second which means there’s plenty of positives and I’ll train and work on my direction.
“It’s a good result for me, I would’ve been happier with first but it’s still a podium, I’m very happy with it!”
The 22nd edition of the Championships are taking place in Bormio, Italy, this week and feature the next generation of English alpine stars in the same week many of us are keeping an eye on the senior stars competing in PyeongChang.
Daniels will compete in Wednesday’s slalom and Thursday’s giant slalom, and is confident of bringing home more medals.
“Finishing second does mean that I’ve got more drive for the rest of the week to win the rest of the races,” she added.
“I’ve got the British Championships coming up so I’ve got to train hard for that, but I’m really looking forward to the slalom here.
“I’ve been training slalom, getting better than I’ve ever done before and getting more confident in it and I’d say it’s probably my best discipline at the minute.”
