Have the Manchester United crowd got a new cult hero in Antony?

Antony Matheus dos Santos, better known as Antony, played his first game for Manchester United on 4th September.

They played Arsenal at Old Trafford and the new arrival impressed on his debut, scoring the opening goal.

Marcus Rashford bagged himself a brace later on in the game to see the Red Devils beat the Gunners 3-1.

After a stunning debut performance, have the Man United crowd who have diligently bought Man U tickets for seasons, enduring turmoil, finally got a new cult hero in Antony?

It’s early days yet, but things are looking promising for the Brazilian winger.

Who is Antony, and can he be a new cult hero for Manchester United?

Antony is Manchester United’s very latest signing, and he made an immediate impact on his debut against Arsenal.

The right-winger transferred from Ajax right at the end of the transfer window, and he has now re-joined his former Ajax manager, Erik Ten Hag.

The 22-year-old was born in Osasco, Brazil, in February 2000, and he spent his youth career playing for Sao Paulo from 2010-18, before joining the senior team in 2020.

He then spent a couple of seasons at Ajax, scoring 58 goals across all competitions.

He has also scored two goals for Brazil in nine senior appearances.

How much did Antony cost?

The transfer to Manchester United reportedly cost £85.50 million, making him Manchester United’s most expensive signing of the summer.

In other words, he has a lot to live up to, and the Manchester United fans will be expecting only the best from the Brazilian international.

Only time will tell if the left-footed winger can live up to the hype and become a new cult hero for the United faithful.
