Cesc Fabregas is waking up to Alan Shearer’s (and probably Jose Mourinho’s) criticism of his failure to protect Chelsea’s back four. Man City’s midfield are basking in the praise of Vincent Kompany.
City made an early-season statement with a dominant 3-0 victory over the Premier League champions in which Kompany scored his second in two games alongside strikes from Sergio Aguero and Fernandinho.
The Belgian was most happy with the cover he got from midfield however rather than any goal-scoring heroics, and called on his side and manager Manuel Pellegrini to stick to their winning formula.
“I thought (Eliaquim) Mangala was superb today as he was last week, then I thought Fernandinho and Yaya (Toure) gave us a lot of support and Bacary (Sagna) and (Aleksandar) Kolarov were solid as ever so those are the things that make our job enjoyable,” Kompany told City’s website.
“Then we can get into challenges with the strikers and then we can intercept balls. It just makes it so much more enjoyable and I think we need to hold onto this feeling.
“There’s no need to make changes to the way we play.”
Kompany could make a budding architect however as he’s willing to change some things at City, most notably the new stadium which he thinks could be expanded even more to create an even louder atmosphere.
“55,000 makes a difference and I can’t wait to increase the stand again. If the support carries on like it was today we’re going to have such a great time at this club, especially at this stadium.
“It’s just fun. It’s fun for the players, it’s fun for the fans and a perfect summer’s day today.”
After following their opening top flight 3-0 win away to West Bromwich Albion with the superb Chelsea victory – to open a five-point gap already over the holders – Kompany is challenging his troops to produce again when they take on Everton on Sunday.
“The five points mean nothing but it is a blow for one of the direct contenders and they’ll need to shake it off in the next couple of weeks.
“It’s too early to say. A start is probably the first ten games. I said the challenge is can you do it again.”
