Winger forced in box to save the day after goalkeeper red carded

A winger put himself in the hot seat and volunteered to take the gloves after his side’s goalkeeper was sent off on Saturday.

Matty Morgan bravely went between the sticks for Trafford in their 2-0 victory over hosts Runcorn Linnets in the Northern Premier League Division West fixture.

The Trafford goalkeeper Sam Booth was sent off after receiving a red card in the 62nd minute for wiping out a Runcorn player.

“As soon as Boothy went off, I was the first to put my hand up,” said Morgan, who recently celebrated 100 games with the club.

“I looked around and all the lads started putting their heads down.

“It filled me with confidence and I said yeah, I’ll take the gloves.

“I know I can kick the ball quite far and I can play cricket so I hoped I could catch it.”

“I definitely don’t want to be playing in goal next week,” joked Morgan.

He added that it was a good “cameo appearance,” but not one he was keen to repeat – despite celebrating his very first clean sheet.
