Head injury controversy in England-Iran game at 2022 World Cup

The early stages of England’s World Cup opener against Iran featured a 10-minute stoppage which sparked debate over the concussion rules in football.

In the ninth minute, Iran goalkeeper Alireza Beyranvand tried to punch a Harry Kane cross but instead clattered heads with defender Majid Hosseini.

Beyranvand fell to the ground and was on the floor for 10 minutes with a suspected broken nose.

However, the decision was on him to continue playing – which he did – but then fell to the floor again two minutes later before leaving on a stretcher.

It has sparked debate on Twitter as to whether or not the concussion rules in football need to change in order to prevent events like this.

In rugby, for example, there is such thing as a concussion substitution where players with the potential injury are forced to leave the field for a check up without losing a substitution.
