Champion: Wayne Rooney overcomes title blues as Manchester United romp to Premier League success

By Alex Bysouth

Wayne Rooney admits he had to dig deep to overcome last season’s Premier League title blues as he helped Manchester United clinch a 20th league title.

Rooney witnessed Sergio Aguero’s added time winner snatch the title from United’s grasp last season, as rivals Manchester City were crowned champions in dramatic fashion.

But the forward has been a key part of Sir Alex Ferguson’s title-winning project this campaign, laying on Robin van Persie for what may be deemed goal of the season.

“When you lose the title, it is hard to take,” he said. “It wasn’t a nice feeling last time.

“We have all dug in deep and have done fantastic to put ourselves in this position.

“It has been a great season for me. We have won the league title – that is what you play for.”

The England forward confessed he was taking nothing for granted after watching the Red Devils throw away a seemingly comfortable eight-point lead last season.

And Rooney praised the mentality of his boss for the players seeing the title race through this campaign – crowned champions with four games to spare.

“You can never take anything for granted in football and thankfully it is now done,” explained Rooney.

“The manager has a great desire and a winning mentality, we all buy into that and want to do well for the club.”

Teammate van Persie was the hero as his fabulous first half hat-trick all but wrapped up the win, and the title, but Rooney could not hide his delight.

“We won this game in the first half and it was a fantastic night for us,” he added.
