Van Gaal magic: Manchester United manager tempts Athletic Bilbao’s Ander Herrera to Old Trafford

Louis van Gaal has used his considerable managerial clout to tempt Athletic Bilbao’s Ander Herrera to Manchester United, according to media reports.

Midfielder Herrera, part of Spain’s London 2012 Olympics squad, would become only United’s second midfield signing in seven years after Belgian Marouane Fellaini became the first in six last summer.

It is thought the three-times European champions might fork out £30million for the Spaniard.

United attempted to lure the 24-year-old Herrera from Spain last summer but failed, prompting the Fellaini move.

Van Gaal, who has steered the Dutch into the last 16 of the World Cup where they will play Mexico, begins his first season in charge of United on August 16 against Swansea.

Herrera, who last season helped Bilbao qualify for the Champions League by finishing fourth behind powerhouses Atletico Madrid, Barcelona and Real Madrid, could be a United player by later today.
