How does the UEFA Super Cup work?

In a single game and on a neutral ground, the Super Cup brings the winners of the UEFA Champions League and Europa League of the season in an important clash, where the winner is considered the best team in the entire continent, in addition to gaining a trophy.

The competition emerged in 1973, with Ajax champions after beating Milan in both final games.

According to information from UEFA, the idea came from journalist Anton Witkamp, who created a tournament to define who would be the best club in Europe.

Initially, the Super Cup was disputed by the European champion and the Cup Winners Cup.

However, from 1999 onwards, the champions of the biggest international tournaments on the continent play.

In the event of a tie in normal time, extra time will start and, if nothing changes, penalties will apply.

Who plays in the UEFA Super Cup 2021?

The UEFA Super Cup in 2021 will see Chelsea, the Champions League champion, and Villarreal, the Europa League winner of the season.

This will be the first time in history that the teams face each other.

After beating Manchester City 1-0, Chelsea, led by Thomas Tuchel, secured their second title in the competition.

On the other hand, Villarreal overcame Manchester United on penalties for the Europa League final, beating them 11-10 following a 1-1 draw.

It is Chelsea’s fifth participation in the European Super Cup, with only Barcelona (nine), AC Milan and Real Madrid (seven), and Liverpool and Sevilla (six) competing on more occasions.

On the other hand, this will be the first time that Villarreal participates in the European Super Cup, as the UEFA Europa League title was the team’s second trophy.

Where and when will the UEFA 2021 Super Cup be held?

The UEFA Super Cup will be held on 11 August at 4pm, at Windsor Park, Belfast.

This will be the country’s first time hosting a European final, however, it’s unconfirmed whether fans will be able to attend.

The stadium, home to Linfield in the Northern Irish First Division and the Northern Ireland team, has 18,000 fans.

UEFA considered moving the game to Istanbul, Turkey, after sending the Champions League final to Portugal, but confirmed that Belfast would remain the host.

Throwback – UEFA Super Cup 2020

Last year, Bayern Munich established itself as the king of European football in 2020.

A month after beating PSG in the Champions League final, the German club beat Europa League champion Sevilla 2-1, to lift the Super Cup.

The game played at Puskás Arena, in the Hungarian capital, was held with the presence of around 20,000 people (30% of the stadium’s capacity).

The Spanish team went ahead through Argentine Lucas Ocampos, who scored a penalty, but German Leon Goretzka equalized in the first half.

The tie remained in regular time and, in extra time, Spaniard Javi Martínez headed in the title goal.

Tickets for the event are not yet available but what is expected is that with the advance of vaccination, the percentage of the stadium may be higher and more people will be able to follow the game.

And for those who won’t follow the tournament at the stadium, several local broadcasters will broadcast the game, and the betting groups will be in full swing.
