Manchester United’s midfield misery deepens as transfer target Mesut Ozil pledges allegiance to Real Madrid

By Tim Hyde

Manchester United faced more midfield misery today, as yet another potential transfer barely gets off the ground before being shot down.

Rumoured target Mesut Ozil has confirmed he has no plans to leave Real Madrid – leaving David Moyes no closer to that elusive summer signing.

A host of midfielders from Europe’s elite clubs have been linked to the Reds through the summer, including Fabregas, Thiago, Marchisio and Fellaini.

But United are yet to make a signing.

And now Ozil joins the list of those who’ve turned their back on the Manchester giants.

The 24-year-old said: “I have a contract until 2016, I feel very good here and get on well with my team-mates.

“For me it’s an honour to play here with this team.

“There has been a lot written in the press, they have spoken of interesting options but I have a contract and I am staying at Real Madrid.”

German international Ozil was one of the stars of La Liga last year under Jose Mourinho and new Los Blanco’s manager Carlo Ancelotti seems to have the same faith installed in the Madrid number 10 as his predecessor did.

Moyes hopes to add to United’s squad as they look to bring in a creative player to replace the recently-retired Paul Scholes.

Time seems to be running out for the Reds boss, although it is expected that Moyes is willing to bid £24million for his former Everton midfielder Marouane Fellaini which should bring the Belgian to Old Trafford.

With only a few days left of the transfer window, United fans might be starting to sweat after large amounts of cash being splashed across the city at the Etihad – reaching close to a £100million.
