Good Samaritan critical after being dragged along M602 by Salford ‘crash victim’ he stopped to help

A Good Samaritan who pulled over on the M602 to investigate an overturned lorry ended up being dragged along the motorway by the supposed ‘crash victim’ who jumped in his OWN van and sped off.

The incident happened at around 8.30am yesterday morning, Sunday March 1, on the M602 slip road just outside Salford.

The 28-year-old VW Caddy driver had left his keys in his ignition when he selflessly pulled into the hard shoulder – giving the lorry driver a chance to make a speedy getaway.

After being dragged along the motorway for a distance, the victim fell off and sustained serious head injuries.

Despite than man’s condition being described last night as ‘critical’, police confirmed this morning that the man was showing positive signs of recovery.

Police later arrested a 43-year-old on suspicion of attempted murder, who currently remains in custody for questioning.

Detective Sergeant Julie Connor from Salford CID said: “We are keen to trace anyone who witnessed this incident and to recover the stolen VW Caddy van registration number DY14 FPN.”

Anyone with information is asked to call Salford CID on 0161 856 5351 quoting log number 723 on 01/03/15, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
