Preview: Kingdom @ HOME – ¡Viva! Festival 25th anniversary special

Innovative theatre company Señor Serrano return to ¡Viva! Festival this April with their hotly-anticipated performance Kingdom.

Following the success of Birdie in 2017, the show will combine video projections, live music, scale models and more to develop the company’s signature concept of ‘cinema-in-real-time.’

Through the motifs of King Kong, fruit and chaos, Kingdom presents a playful examination of current affairs and the mechanisms of Western society.

It promises ‘the most exotic of cocktails,’ using footage from the King Kong films and uniting the history of bananas and capitalism in a way that has never been seen before.

By pushing the boundaries of performance art, the Barcelona-based company hold a mirror to our complex world.

Although the show made its debut at the GREC Festival de Barcelona this July, the run of performances at HOME this month will mark its first UK outing.

Founded in 2006, Señor Serrano are known for exploring contemporary narratives with their unique cinematic approach. In each show, the group explore a new micro-universe and present a central message through a range of artistic mediums.

Previous multimedia performance Birdie revisited Alfred Hitchcock’s 1963 classic The Birds with live video, objects and 2000 miniature animals.

Kingdom will be scaled up from their previous shows as the group add more performers and expand their creative team.

With founder Àlex Serrano, Pau Palacios and Barbara Bloin at the company’s core, they have won several awards including the Silver Lion of the Venice Biennale 2015 and the City of Barcelona Prize 2016.

In its 25th year, the Spanish and Latin American ¡Viva! Festival presents a carefully curated line-up of theatre and film from across the globe.

¡Viva!, based at HOME, is the only UK festival dedicated to appreciating and promoting cinema from Spain and Latin America.

Set over three weeks, it will reflect HOME’s 2019 theme of Celebrating Women in Global Cinema and promises to be a highlight of their calendar.

Other exciting performances include the UK premiere of José Luis Cuerda’s Tiempo Después and a one-off collaboration between Manchester Camerata and Italian violinist Francesca Dego.
