Bolton's Amir Khan insists Alexander fight is still on as rumours abound over Floyd Mayweather showdown

By Scott Hunt

Bolton-born boxer Amir Khan has denied rumours he has pulled out of his fight against Devon Alexander in preparation for his potential big-money bout against Floyd Mayweather next May.

Khan, 26, is due to fight Alexander on December 7 for the IBF welterweight title.

However the Daily Mail claimed last night that he had scrapped the fight and will face Mayweather, the world's best pound-for-pound fighter, in May.

Amir Khan’s office released a statement early on Thursday morning rubbishing such claims.

The statement read: “Team Khan would like to dispel recent reports that Amir Khan has pulled out of a potential match-up with Devon Alexander on December 7.

“Amir Khan is currently in training camp in San Francisco with the aim of fighting again in December against Alexander once an agreement can be reached.”

The fight on December 7 is all arranged apart from deciding on a venue.

It is the potential fight against Mayweather though that excites boxing fans and is the big prospect on the horizon for Khan.

The US boxer won his 45th successive fight when he beat Saul Alvarez in September and he continues to be linked with Khan.

With Khan insisting he will fight Alexander in December, a May fight against Mayweather seems unlikely.

It does however seem there is a desire on both sides for the fight to happen at some point.

Should the fight take place, it would almost certainly be the richest bout ever involving a British boxer.
