Danny Childs slams match officials after Mancunians RL slump to heavy defeat at hands of Ashton Bears

By Alec Herron

‘Manc of the Match’ Danny Childs laid into the match officials, after an injury-hit Mancunians RL slumped to a heavy defeat against Ashton Bears on Saturday.

Debutant Stephen Budworth ran over for the visitors’ sole try, while Ashton’s 13 scores kept Mancunians rooted at the bottom of the North West Men’s Division Four.

Childs insisted the referee had not helped his side, but he believes Mancunians will continue to improve as the season continues.

“The ref didn’t seem to understand the difference between a forward and backward pass,” he said. “Ashton, however, were too good for us on the day.

“We just needed to be a bit better prepared and use a little more rugby league knowledge, which will come with time.”

Ashton, who moved into a playoff spot with the crushing victory, dominated proceedings but Childs was proud of Mancunians’ application until the final whistle.

And he believes this effort was summed-up perfectly when 17-year-old hooker Mike Maguire was sent to the sin bin four minutes from time.

“I know I have big Mike to back me up from now on,” added Childs. “We showed good resilience, playing as a team to the last minute.”

Mancunians are searching for a new head coach and hope to make an appointment this week, following a series of strong applications.

And the new man’s first task will be the challenge of taking on Chester Gladiators at Hough End Stadium on the 15th June.
