‘Success is tattooed across this badge’: David Moyes promises to keep up Manchester United’s winning ways

By Reece Lawrence

New boss David Moyes has revealed he believes success and Manchester United go hand in hand – and that he is ‘hungry’ to continue the club’s winning ways.

During his first press conference as Sir Alex Ferguson’s successor, the Scot talked about the expectations of his new job and how he intended to go about his work.

He said: “Success is tattooed right across this badge. This club is about winning trophies. I’m hungry to do it, but I won’t change myself.

“We’ll always go after the best players so we’ll do everything we can to make sure we remain at the top. This club’s always interested in the best players.”

At the same time, the 50-year-old also placed emphasis on the club’s famed youth system.

“A big part of my job is to bring young players through the academy”, he said.

However, Moyes refused to be drawn on rumours linking Cristiano Ronaldo with a return to his former club from Real Madrid.

He said: “I would never speak about players that are about other football clubs.”

Moyes also hoped his new team would play entertaining and exciting football, but stressed that he would always put victory first – wishing for the ‘magic touch’ his predecessor had in making match-winning changes during games.

He revealed he contacted United legend Paul Scholes, who retired from playing at the end of last season, about joining the coaching set-up.

“I spoke with Paul and he felt he wanted to have time off with his family. There’ll be a place for him, when he thinks he’s ready.”

He also claimed United had been given the most difficult opening fixtures in years – a list which includes a trip to Swansea, and games against Chelsea, Liverpool and rivals Manchester City.

“I’m not convinced that’s the way the balls came out the hat,” he said. “Over the last five years I’ve never seen Manchester United get a tougher start.”
