Manchester City 'back to best' after 4-1 Southampton romp leaves fate of title in own hands

Manuel Pellegrini believes his Manchester City side is ‘back to its best’ after a rampant 4-1 win over Southampton kept the fate of the Premier League title in their own hands.

The result leaves City just four points behind leaders Liverpool with two games in hand.

The Citizens must travel to Anfield this Sunday though in a game which could decide the title’s final destination.

Yaya Toure opened the scoring for the hosts with an early penalty after Edin Dzeko was brought down by Jose Fonte after minimal contact.

Rickie Lambert equalised for the away side before Nasri put the Blues back in front after a dubious offside call.

Dzeko powered in a third on half-time before Stevan Jovetic added a fourth late on to see off the Saints in a comfortable victory.

And the performance left Pellegrini declaring his side were back to their best.

“Maybe we had low performances in the month of February and at the start of March but I think that now the team has come back to its best performances,” he said.

“We are enjoying a very good second round of fixtures where the results are much better than the first half.”

Following an inconsistent period, which saw them drop crucial league points and eliminated from two cups, they have now collected 13 points out of the last 15 available.

A continuation of that form will ensure a second domestic crown in three years and Pellegrini stated they remain focussed and expect no favours from elsewhere.

“We just depend on ourselves until the end of the season – it’s important to continue playing the way we did in the second half because I thought it was a great performance,” the Chilean added.

“The four teams have the same pressure until the end of the season – they all want to win the title.”
