Wigan community ‘distressed’ as ‘senseless’ vandals deface graves of loved ones

Wigan’s community has been left ‘immensely distressed’ after callous vandals struck a cemetery, defacing several headstones.

A distraught woman alerted police to the incident after finding the grave of a loved-one damaged at the Gidlow Centery on Wigan Road, Standish.

It is believed the vandals struck at some time between 6:30pm on Monday June 29 and 6pm on Tuesday June 30.

Police Constable Steve Waddington of Wigan division said: “This is senseless behaviour and over the last few weeks there have been a number of similar incidents.

“A woman was distraught to find that a loved-one’s grave had been vandalised. This has understandably caused immense distress within the community, and we are taking this seriously.”

Police are now appealing to anyone who has information about this awful incident or who may know one of the vandals to come forward.

PC Waddington added: “We need to find the culprits, who may very well live the local area, so I am appealing to the community for help in identifying them.

“If you suspect who may be involved then please call us.”

Anyone with information is asked to call police on 0161 856 7124 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
