Manchester United to cement ‘world’s most popular club’ tag by expanding social media presence

By Marios Papaloizou

Manchester United are attempting to consolidate their position as ‘the world’s biggest club’ by extending their global social media presence.

The club announced today that it was launching official pages on Google+, Instagram and Renren.

The move comes after the Reds successfully ventured into the realms of Twitter and Sina Weibo last month.

The club’s group managing director Richard Arnold said: “Today marks another exciting development in the club’s digital media offering.

“These social media sites provide us with the platform to unite our fans across the globe and bring them closer to the club.”

United were relative late-comers to the Twittersphere but Arnold was taken aback by the substantial following the club has garnered in a short space of time.

“Manchester United has an extremely passionate and loyal fan base and we have been overwhelmed by the success of our Twitter and Sina Weibo pages,” he said.

“Our Twitter page alone achieved 350k followers in its first 24 hours of operation.

“We look forward to building on this enhanced level of fan engagement with the new services we have launched today.”
