Manchester Arndale stabbings: Latest updates after multiple injuries in town centre

Enquiries are continuing in relation to the attack at the Arndale Shopping Centre on Friday morning that left several people injured – one requiring surgery in hospital.

The 40-year-old knifeman, who was arrested on suspicion of committing a terrorism offence, has now been assessed by specialist doctors and compulsorily detained under the Mental Health Act.

The investigation will continue in order to fully understand the motives behind the attack, in which five people were injured while at least one member of staff from the Arndale and a member of the public intervened in the attack.

“We would like to praise and thank them for their bravery,” Greater Manchester Police said in a statement.

“There is not believed to be any wider threat to the communities of Greater Manchester and the attacker is believed to have acted alone.”

Those injured were a 59-year-old man who received stab wounds to his hand and palm, a 19-year-old woman who required surgery after being stabbed in the arm and arm pit, a 49-year-old woman who received a cut to her elbow, a 33-year-old woman cut on her stomach and a 43-year-old woman who was physically involved in the incident but doesn’t appear to have any visible injuries.

GMP are continuing to ask that any images or footage that may have been taken at the scene is provided to police via http://www.ukpoliceimageappeal.co.uk/
