Goodbye Gigg Lane: Bury target return to championship after home ground renamed The JD Stadium

By Ruth Dacey

Bury Football Club’s ground which has stood since 1885, Gigg Lane, has been renamed The JD Stadium after they signed the ‘largest commercial deal in the club’s history.’

The Shakers have secured a three-year deal with Bury-founded sports retailer JD Sports, who will also become the primary shirt sponsor from next season.

Bury FC chairman Stewart Day said he hoped the momentous occasion would help the League Two strugglers, currently two points clear of relegation, fulfil their ambition of climbing the football pyramid.

“This is such an exciting partnership for the club and would like to thank JD Sports Fashion PLC for their commitment to our vision, which is to take Bury Football Club back to the Championship,” he told the club’s website.

“This is an amazing deal for Bury Football Club and highlights the hard work being put in behind the scenes to secure the future of this great Club.

“I hope our many loyal fans appreciate the progress being made to ensure financial security at the Club.”

Bury’s proud history, after the club’s formation in 1885, was hugely appealing to JD Group chief executive Barry Bown.

“We look forward to assisting the club going forward. As a company that is based locally for over 30 years, we are proud to support Bury FC and its long term goals,” said Bown.
