'No friends in football': Poleon calls on Oldham to stay mean, stay keen

'No friends in football': Poleon calls on Oldham to stay mean, stay keen

Oldham Athletic’s two-goal hero Dominic Poleon wants to push on after his double against Sheffield United on Saturday and spearhead a strong end to the season.

The Latics are ten points off sixth place and with only four games remaining their play-off hopes are getting fainter by the day.

But Poleon believes a strong finish is its own reward and after his heroics on Saturday he is motivated for tonight’s match with Coventry City at the Ricoh Arena.

"I have a few friends I have that play for Coventry but as soon as you cross the white line there are no friends in football,” he said.

"You are there to get the job done and walk away with the three points.”

The former Leeds United man won Sky Sports News’ goal of the day with his second goal against Sheffield United on Saturday and claims a 65-yard Premier League screamer inspired his audacious effort.

“I was delighted with the goals but really disappointed with the result,” he said.

“I was watching Charlie Adam the other week and I thought, you know what, I'll give it a go and luckily it went in."

Saturday’s frustrating draw leaves Oldham without a win in four games but manager Dean Holden chooses to see the last four games of the season as four chances to put that right.

"I've embraced the challenge and I've had a lot of help behind-the-scenes. Everybody has pulled in the right direction and hopefully you can see that on the pitch. The lads are enjoying themselves and none of us want it to end,” he said.

"There is not a lot in the division as we have seen with the teams at the top. We have competed with Bristol City and Sheffield United recently and the Rochdale game, we have competed with the teams at the top and there isn't a lot of difference between the top and the bottom.

"You have got to be on your metal on the day. It is a fantastic arena for the lads to go and play football in and we are very much looking forward to it."
