Manchester Arena to host THREE WBO world title bouts in exciting October card

Boxing promoter Frank Warren has labelled the mouthwatering WBO title fights card at the Manchester Arena in October  as “World War Three”.

WBO world middleweight champion Andy Lee defends his belt against Billy Joe Saunders on October 10 after their fight was switched from Limerick to England after the former’s illness caused a setback to his training.

Also fighting on the night is local favourite (and Manchester’s first world champion since Ricky Hatton) Terry Flanagan, defending his WBO world lightweight title against his number one contender Diego Magdaleno from Las Vegas – a man who labels himself as ‘Mr Superb’.

“We billed it as World War Three and that’s what there will be: three wars,” said Warren.

“But not only that it’s got a great undercard. The three main acts though would be enough to headline any card, so to have all three is a real plus.”

The card will be boosted by a third bout, and a battle for the vacant WBO world light-middleweight belt, featuring Liam Smith and Michel Soro.

Further down the card Luke Blackledge takes on Lee Markham for the Commonwealth super middleweight title, whilst Craig Evans and Tom Stalker meet in a tough to call lightweight clash.
A Manchester super featherweight derby between Adrian Gonzalez and John Kays adds to the local flavour and one of the UK’s leading prospects Jack Catterall is set for another outing on the way to boxing’s top table. Cromer lightweight Liam Walsh is set for a world title eliminator on the card against an opponent to be named.
