Football club will be next for Salford City Reds owner Marwan Koukash as he looks to splash cash on new asset

By Mark Shales

Salford City Reds owner Marwan Koukash is looking to add a football club to his growing portfolio of sporting assets.

The Kuwait-born businessman rescued the Reds from the brink of administration in January, following impressive successes as a racehorse owner

Although rumours are linking him to League One side Oldham Athletic, neither party have made any official announcement.

“There is a club I’m looking at which hopefully we will be able to secure within the next month or two,” Dr Koukash told BBC World Service.

“I’m not going to reveal which club it is but it will complement my interest in racing and rugby.”

“Before I got involved in racing I was at the point where I nearly completed the purchase of a Championship side.

“I had quite a lot of success early on to the point where I put football aside and concentrated more on racing, and now I’m looking for a new challenge.”

Within two months of arriving in Barton, the 53-year-old displaced head coach Phil Veivers before bringing in current boss Brian Noble.

Despite failing with early bids to bring England trio Sam Tomkins, Adrian Morley and Rangi Chase to Salford, a number of signings are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

And Dr Koukash, who has said he will leave The Reds if success is not achieved, believes he can bring the rumoured football club back to its former glories.

“The particular club we’re looking at the remedy for it is there,” he added. “It was a huge club previously and it just needs that little bit of extra investment to take it to the next level.

“By bringing in the personnel that were previously associated with the club at its heyday and bringing people in who are genuine club supporters it will excite the fans.

“Once I get the football club I will definitely have my own TV channel which will cover my three sports; racing, rugby and football.”
