Elderly woman held at knifepoint as hooded gang swipe ‘sentimental’ jewellery from Burnage home

By Danielle Wainwright

An elderly woman was robbed in her Burnage home last week and held at knifepoint as a gang of men rummaged through her belongings and fled with jewellery.

The 76-year-old woman was in the lounge with her husband when four men kicked through her kitchen door on Grangethorpe Drive between 9.40pm and 9.50pm on Saturday September 14.

Two of the men then went upstairs and searched the bedrooms while the other two men stayed with the victim.

One of the men held a hunting knife and the victim, who feared for her life, handed over her jewellery and the thieves then fled.

Detective Constable Mark Evans, from South Manchester division, said: “Luckily the elderly victim was not injured during her ordeal, but has been left understandably distraught.

“The items are not only worth a considerable amount of money but they hold great sentimental value to the victim.

“We have released images of the stolen jewellery and I would ask pawnbrokers and other outlets who offer cash for gold and similar items to be mindful of this incident and if they are approached with a view to buying the goods please get in touch.

“I would also urge anyone who may have witnessed this incident, or have any information about the robbery to call the police as soon as possible.”

They are described as black or Asian with slim athletic builds, aged between 20 and 22 and wearing dark clothing with their hoods up.

Anyone with information should call police on 0161 856 4973 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
