Quell your curiosity: Salford says ‘cello’ to classical music concerts

The BBC Philharmonic Orchestra are starting a brand new series of concerts at Salford University, which hope to widen the audience for classical music – both new and old.

Chamber Music Mondays, which will feature the BBC Philharmonic’s world class musicians and guest artists, won’t charge an entry fee, but will instead simply ask for a donation.

The concerts will take place monthly on Mondays at 5.45pm at Peel Hall on the University’s Peel Park Campus and organisers hope that the series will encourage a new audience from Salford and across Manchester.

Professor Stephen Davismoon, Director of Music at the University of Salford, said: “The series is aimed at students, those that work in the area, the unemployed, the old the young – in fact anyone who is curious about brilliant music and talented music-makers.

“We have wanted to do more with the BBC Philharmonic for some time now, and we are delighted that this has finally come off.

“This partnership comes at a particularly exciting time for the University of Salford as we make significant investment in our Peel Campus for all of our arts programmes.

“Our beloved Peel Hall has had a significant face-lift over the summer and the construction of our wonderful New Adelphi building, which will offer tremendous world-class facilities for creative study, is rapidly nearing completion.”

The first concert on Monday 28th September will feature new music by Manchester-based composers, performed by the Vonnegut Collective – also known as Gemma Bass and Gary Farr.

The second concert will feature chamber music by Brahms and Mozart.

Proceeds from the events will support the new Salford Music Fund, aimed at supporting the continued development of music in Salford.

Future concerts in the series will be listed here
