David Cameron has announced he is to stand down as Prime Minister after the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union.
Mr Cameron, speaking outside 10 Downing Street following the announcement of the EU Referendum result, said that the British people had ‘made a very clear decision to take a different path’ to the one he had proposed in remaining in the EU.
Insisting he had fought the referendum campaign with his head and heart, Mr Cameron said: “I will do everything I can as Prime Minister to steady the ship over the coming weeks and months. But I do not think it would be right for me to try to be the captain that steers our country to its next destination.
“This is not a decision I have taken lightly. But I do believe it’s in the national interest to have a period of stability and then the new leadership required.”
Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron, who had earlier launched an attack on Labour and leader Jeremy Corbyn for what he called a ‘spineless’ approach to the campaign, said the result had left Mr Cameron with no choice but to resign.
He said: “David Cameron has become the latest Conservative leader to fall victim to his party’s dangerous obsession with Europe.
“The Conservative’s political maneuvering has taken our country to the brink, and today we have toppled over the edge.”
