Coronation Street veteran Barbara Knox has been arrested for drink driving after appearing at a Cheshire police station while believed to be under the influence.

The 80-year-old soap star, who plays Rita Tanner in the hit TV show, is said to have been detained by police after her daughter Maxine Ashcroft was arrested earlier in the evening.

According to sources, Ashcroft was arrested after being breathalysed by Cheshire police when driving her mother home.

She was allegedly found to be three times over the limit.

Reports state that Knox arrived at Knutsford Police Station in Cheshire demanding to speak to her daughter, but was then arrested herself as police suspected she had driven there while under the influence of alcohol.

A Cheshire police spokesman said: “At 6.41pm on Monday 10 March 2014 police stopped a car in Hollow Lane in Knutsford.

“A 56-year-old woman from Gloucestershire was arrested on suspicion of drink driving.

“An 80-year-old woman from Knutsford later arrived at Knutsford Police Station and was also arrested on suspicion of drink driving. She was bailed pending further enquiries.

“The 56-year-old woman was charged with driving when the alcohol level was above the limit and bailed to appear at Macclesfield Magistrates on April 2 2014.”

Knox has been a staple on Coronation Street after making her first appearance in 1964.

Originally hired for just one episode, she returned in 1972 and has been a stalwart of the cast ever since.

She has been involved in a number of dramatic storylines, including the death of her husband from a brain tumour and an attempt from her ex-partner Alan Bradley to kill her.
