Manchester United v Aston Villa preview: Solskjaer defends Pogba as he nears return

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has defended Paul Pogba’s injury when he gave an update ahead of Sunday’s fixture against Aston Villa.

Speaking after their Europa League defeat to Astana, the United boss hinted at his possible return within the next week, defending any claims that the Frenchman has taken liberty of the situation.

He said: “Every player is allowed to be injured when he’s injured and Paul is working hard to get back.

“No one can doubt his professionalism, his willingness or his desire to play football.

“He’s one of the best midfielders in the world and it’ll be like signing a new player before the transfer window opens.”

Having been asked about his potential return to the side on Sunday, the Norwegian said: “Sunday, no. Tottenham?

“I can’t say now, because I’ve not been home and seen him, let’s see where he’s at when he comes back and starts training with us.”

The Frenchman has been missing since the 1-1 draw at home to Arsenal on September 30.

Solskjaer also hinted that Scott McTominay could return as early as the weekend clash after the Scotsman was a noticeable absentee against Sheffield United last weekend with United deploying a makeshift midfield two.

The United boss said: “He’s stepping up his recovery and let’s see how soon he’ll be match-fit and available.”

In regards to his availability he added: “Maybe Villa, maybe Spurs, hopefully for Sunday.”
