The data to show which area of Manchester received the most noise complaints from 1 January 2024-1 January 2025 has been revealed.
Altogether, 5301 complaints were made across the board about noise disturbances in the city.
Hulme is classified as the loudest area, with 304 complaints about noise being registered in the period from early 2024 to early 2025.
In the central areas, Longsight appeared to be the quietest, with only 135 complaints received in the same period.
Similarly, Piccadilly is noisier than Deansgate, receiving 93% more noise complaints than the latter in the last year.
In South Manchester, Didsbury East appeared to be the quietest area, with only 57 complaints received.
The loudest southern region appears to be Withington, with 300 complaints about audible disturbances registered.
However, 5454 complaints about noise were made in the city in 2022, which is actually lower than the astonishing 7158 complaints about the same made in 2021, mostly about levels of noise when people were inside during lockdown.
In 2022, the most common complaints made regarding noise across the city were domestic noises, which are classified as people, parties, loud music, DIY, and loud TV and radios.
These are then followed by barking dogs, noisy pubs and students making noise, which was a particular bugbear for the residents of Fallowfield.
Manchester Police receive on average five complaints a night about rowdy behaviour from the houses of those neighbouring student accommodation.
There was also a high percentage of complaints about car and house alarms, construction dins, fights, anti-social behaviour and roadworks.
Chris Wilkinson, a member of Manchester City Council who specialises in The Neighbourhoods Service and Neighbourhoods Directorate, said:
“Noise is actually an environmental issue; it is the main disturbance people report and is a leading factor in people choosing to move out of cities.
“It is essential to have things in place like Neighbourhood Watch Schemes and helplines that will deal with these, so that people know their complaints will be listened to.”
Iris Buckle, 58, is a civil servant living in Withington.
“Every single day, I see Facebook groups with pages of fresh complaints regarding loud behaviour and unpleasant noises in town.
“We’re not trying to be killjoys, you are still allowed to have a good time, but most people are just not respectful of others.”
The non-emergency helpline 101 is available to register complaints about anti-social disturbances in Manchester.
