With a new album due to drop this summer, American neo-psychedelia merchants MGMT return to Manchester’s Apollo as part of a UK tour this autumn.
After 2007’s highly accessible and highly successful debut, Oracular Spectacular, 2010’s follow-up, Congratulations, saw a sea-change in style, challenging fans with a new creative direction.
Congratulations’ relative commercial drop doesn’t seem to have dulled the Connecticut duo’s desire to experiment with the MGMT sound and anyone hoping for a return to songs like synth-pop anthem Kids may be left disappointed by the upcoming third album.
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone magazine, core members Ben Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden said the new album would be influenced by Aphex Twin and house music.
The tour kicks off in Glasgow on October 12, before arriving in Manchester on October 14. The band will also take in dates in Wolverhampton, Dublin and London.
Although little has been released in way of teasers, the band have premiered two tracks from the forthcoming album.
Alien Days was released as part of April’s Record Store Day event and they performed the track Mystery Disease at a gig at Penn State University in Pennsylvania back in April.
