Events cancelled after the death of the Queen

Following the death of the Queen yesterday, various events and shops will be cancelled or closed, here is a list of what’s going to happen.

As the nation mourns the death of Queen Elizabeth II, plans had been drawn up for when Her Majesty passed away.

The plans include major differences to what events are on, where we shop and what appears on TV. 

On the day of her funeral there will be a bank holiday, with most places shut or subject to changing their opening hours. 

Selfridges has led tributes to the Queen as the store decided it would not open its doors on Friday. 

The company closed early on Thursday and said it would remain closed until further notice – reopening at the weekend. 

“Over the past 70 years, her Majesty has been dedicated to the service of our country and the Commonwealth, demonstrating an enormous sense of duty and commitment.”

The Premier League, EFL and WSL and Scottish leagues have postponed this weekend’s fixtures. 

A statement from the Premier league said: “Further updates regarding Premier League fixtures during the period of mourning will be provided in due course.”

Premier League, chief executive Richard Masters said: “We and our clubs would like to pay tribute to Her Majesty’s long and unwavering service to our country.

“As our longest-serving monarch, she has been an inspiration and leaves behind an incredible legacy following a life of dedication.

“This is a tremendously sad time for not just the nation but also for the millions of people around the world who admired her, and we join together with all those in mourning her passing.”

Friday’s Tour of Britain stage was cancelled and later on Thursday evening the rest of the tour, which was set to finish on the Isle of Wight on Sunday, was completely cancelled. 

When news broke of the Queen’s ill health emerged on Thursday, the BBC emptied its scheduled programming and all presenters changed into black outfits. 

The BBC will also suspend all comedy programming during the 12-day period of national mourning. 

ITV interrupted their usual shows and produced a news special on the Queen – Channel 4 also cancelled their programmes and produced extended news coverage. 

Following the death of the Queen yesterday, the BBC have announced that the last night of the proms will be cancelled out of respect.

A statement issued by the BBC said: “Following the very sad news of the death of Her Majesty The Queen, as a mark of respect we will not be going ahead with Prom 71 on Friday 9 September, or the Last Night of the proms on Saturday 10 September.”

Closer to home, a new annual festival to launch in 2022 has also been cancelled. Gongoozler Fest – a council led event was set to take place this weekend 9-11 September in Tameside.

The festival had a string of events planned celebrating heritage, art and the local waterways of Stalybridge.

Tameside Council Assistant Executive Member for Culture, Heritage and Clllr Sangita Patel said: “It is with a heavy heart that we are cancelling events that we know people were looking forward to.”

Tameside Council also took to twitter to confirm: “Tonight’s Street Fest will not be going ahead.

“Gongoozler Fest and other council events cancelled during national mourning, all other council services will run as normal.”

The Gin & Rum festival to be held in Manchester Cathedral has also been cancelled. Manchester Cathedral released a statement on their website saying: “All other events have been cancelled until after the state funeral as we observe this period of national mourning.”

Oldham Coliseum have announced “Out of respect for Her Majesty The Queen, we have made the decision to cancel The Haunting of Blaine Manor this evening.

“We are contacting all ticket holders and working with the show’s promoter to find a new date.. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
