Coronation Street star Rupert Hill will make his playwriting debut with HUSK which opens at Hope Mill Theatre later this month.
Directed by Hope Mill Theatre’s Artistic Director Joseph Houston, HUSK promises to be a dark, twisted tale of violence, love, addiction, and revenge delivered with a dose of black humour.
Houston said: “I look forward to audiences experiencing what I hope will be a thrilling, heartfelt, funny, dark theatrical rollercoaster.”
Ray has just been released from a long stint in prison. Homeless and penniless, he pitches a tent in a forest set on seeking revenge on the man responsible for putting him behind bars.
His past is slowly revealed through a series of flashbacks spanning over 30 years. Beth and her husband Clark are spending the summer at her Dad’s house overlooking the sea near Blackpool. Are they really being terrorised by a mysterious couple? Or is it a fabrication of the father’s increasing dementia?
Hill’s first play is partially inspired by his own experience with alcohol abuse and addiction, alhough this wasn’t his intention when he set out to write HUSK.
He said “In hindsight I think I did write a play about addiction.
“My sincere desire is that the play is a story about finding hope and love out of the bleakest of situations.”
Hill also leads the production, playing the protagonist Ray, alongside Danielle Henry, Daniel Poyser, David Crellin and David McCreedy.
HUSK is running from 25 September until 29 September before heading to The Dukes Theatre in Lancaster on 2 October for a two-night run.
