‘Manchester has the best music scene in the country’: Record label makes open call to city’s student musicians

A student record label is using their launch in Manchester tonight as a drive to discover more new acts.

New Street Records, who are looking to sign students from the city’s universities, are encouraging local musicians to approach them with submissions at Sound Control tonight.

The label, which started in Birmingham in February 2015, aims to give opportunities to both musicians and those interested in working behind the scenes.

Managed exclusively by current university students, the team hope to expand the label here in Manchester.

“I think Manchester has the best music scene in the entire country, there are so many iconic venues and so many iconic studios,” New Street Records spokesman Matthew O’Brien told MM.

“It’s a great place to do this kind of thing because there are a lot of people here who love music and going to live events and we want to be part of that.

“It’s such a hard industry to break into in the first place and we offer students the chance to do what they really want to do and get experience in the music industry.”

The event will feature local bands Tindrumm, Crossfire and White Eskimo along with Birmingham signing Sam Jackson.

New Street Records is a non-profit organisation and all proceeds from the launch will go towards promoting the work of future signings.

“With the artists that we sign we’re going to offer studio time and an EP that we’ll put out for them with physical and digital sales,” said Matthew, an English language and Screen studies student.

“We’ll also provide band management so that they’ll have someone with them at all times when they’re gigging around making sure that they know where they need to be.”

The team hope to have at least two signed artists with EPs and tour dates by the end of the year.

The event, held at Sound Control and supported by Spotify, will feature DJ sets after the live performances.

Doors open at 7 with tickets priced at £4.
