Theatre review: 9 to 5 The Musical @ Manchester Opera House

By Steven Brown

Country music legend Dolly Parton’s hit show 9 to 5 The Musical yeehawed into Manchester for a short five-night run last night.

The Queen of Nashville patronised the Opera House with a welcoming ‘Well howdy there!’ as a projection of her and her infamous assets were displayed on the stage as she took on the role of narrator.

Set in 1970s America 9 to 5 relates the tale of three female office workers who turn the tables on their sexist boss.

Within the first few notes of iconic title song 9 To 5 the audience were on their feet clapping, dancing and singing along with the cast.

But don’t be fooled into thinking this is merely camp fluff, songs Backwoods Barbie draws on Dolly’s own experiences of overcoming childhood poverty while Get Out and Stay Out relates to a troubled relationship and brings a real emotion to the show.

The whole cast pulled out the stops to ensure a brilliant performance, but a special mention must go to Ben Richards whose portrayal of sexist boss Franklin Hart Jr. was humorous, dripping with distain and worryingly believable.

But the standout performance of the night was by Amy Lennox who played misunderstood Texan Doralee Rhodes perfectly.

No mean feat when you consider that she was filling some extremely large shoes by tackling Dolly’s role in the 1980s hit film.

If you’re a fan of Dolly and are looking for a night full of great music, fun and laughter then this musical comedy is a must see.

9 to 5 The Musical will be at Manchester Opera House until August 24.
