MM’s top five…unmissable hard-hitting US television series

There’s nothing like kicking back, relaxing and catching up with your latest favourite TV show.

But if you’ve caught up with the latest episode and there’s nothing on the TV that tickles your fancy then it’s worth digging out some DVD box sets.

If it’s anything like my house, we spend 15 minutes arguing what to watch, half-heartedly settling on a compromise choice and then sit silently seething with neither party enjoying the show.

Check out our guide to the top five unmissable US TV series that will surely keep the peace next time there’s nothing to watch on telly. You can thank me later.

5. Almost Human

Set in the future, Detective John Kennex is partnered up with an android colleague Dorian to help tackle the rapid increase in crime rates.

The series is still very much in its early stages but they’ve nailed the casting and thrown in some great visual effects.

If you are a fan of Total Recall then this show is perfect for you.

4. Grimm

Those who loved scary fairy stories as a child get the chance to revisit some of the spookier characters in TV series Grimm.

Nick Burkhadt is a homicide detective who discovers he is a Grimm – a decedent of hunters who are built to track down and kill supernatural forces.

Loosely based on Brothers Grimm characters and other myths and legends each self-contained episode takes the viewer on a fresh and new journey each week. Well worth a watch.

3. Game of Thrones

Set in the fictional land of Westeros Games of Thrones sees seven families battling to take control of this vast mythical land.

The seven kingdoms have lived in peace since King Robert (in Series One) took control of the throne, but all is not what it seems.

Murder, treason, incest and more trips to brothels than you can shake a stick has kept audiences agog since its UK premiere three years ago.

And the show was still producing heart-in-mouth reactions at season four’s conclusion.

Game of Thrones is one of those rare shows that manages to combine ruthless violence, rampant sex scenes and interweave them among a truly compelling storyline.

2. Breaking Bad

Walter White is a high-school chemistry teacher who pulls extra shifts at a car wash to make ends meet.

After being diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer he decides to secure his family’s future by turning to a life of crime.

He puts his chemistry knowledge into practise and produces, with the help of former student Jesse Pinkman, the world’s purest meth.

Not only does it give viewers a sneak peek of the seedy underworld of the meth trade, but it also manages to give an honest and emotive insight of living with a terminal diagnosis.

1. The Walking Dead

Gore fans have devoured the last four seasons of post-apocalyptic horror drama The Walking Dead.

Deputy sheriff Rick Grimes is valiantly trying to keep law and order among a group of survivors who are fighting against, what else, a zombie invasion.

The plot, based on the comic book, is hard hitting, heart wrenching and, inevitably, a veritable gore fest.

If you want a relaxing TV experience then this isn’t the show for you but if your entertainment with plenty of edge-of-your-seat moments then sit down, unplug and enjoy a few hours of this unapologetic brutal thriller.
