The 300ft bungee jump in Tatton Park

The Deansgate pub braves the bungee for Macmillan

The team at the Deansgate, Manchester took on the highest bungee jump in the United Kingdom last weekend to raise money for Macmillan.

Nine staff members from the historic central Manchester pub travelled to Tatton Park on Sunday 17 September to take the 300 foot leap in aid of the cancer support charity.

Surrounded by family and friends, they each conquered their fears as team member Sabrina Ali said: “It was absolutely terrifying and I didn’t know if I could do it, but I’m so glad I did! especially for such a great cause.”

Home to reindeer, a mansion, and the Tudor Old Hall, the scenic Knutsford park also accommodates the tallest regularly occurring bungee jump in the country – done for leisure or for charity – and attracts people from all over the UK who want to take the leap.

Fundraising for Macmillan is on-going within the Greene King pub, with frequent events taking place to help raise money.

Earlier this year, the team turned the Great Manchester Run into a fundraising opportunity, with the finish line practically on their doorstep.

Staff baked cakes and handed out breakfast in return for a donation, also visiting the crowds with collection boxes.

A large group of the team also climbed Snowdon in aid of the cancer support charity in June as temperatures soared, and Manchester pride became a perfect fundraising opportunity as collection boxes on each of the three bars were put to good use.

Macmillan estimates that there are around three million people living with cancer in the United Kingdom, and those figures are expected to rise to four million by 2030.

In addition, an estimated 460 people in the UK die each day from cancer, showing just how important events and donations like these are for Macmillan.

September is a significant month in the cancer awareness calendar, dedicated to six types including blood and thyroid cancer. The pub not only aim to raise money, but awareness.

Events Manager at the Deansgate Beth Perry said: “What a fantastic day and what an experience doing the bungee jump.”

The day was one of excitement, emotion, and anticipation, but the overwhelming helping hand to the nervous jumpers was the reason they were doing it.

Perry said: “It was so humbling having so many of the team take part. I’m so so happy with the money we got to raise.”

Each member of staff raised an excess of £120 for the charity and they do not plan on stopping any time soon: collection boxes remain on all bars as the pub continue to support Macmillan.
